As part of efforts to strengthen joint initiatives to develop the civil society work system in Egypt and maximize its developmental impact on citizens, the Technical Secretariat of the National Alliance for Developmental Civil Society Organizations held an extensive consultative meeting with the Board of Directors of the General Union of NGOs and Civil Society Organizations at the Union’s headquarters in Cairo.
The meeting was attended by Ambassador Nabila Makram, Head of the Technical Secretariat of the National Alliance; Dr. Talaat Abdel Qawy, President of the General Union of NGOs and Civil Society Organizations; Hatem Metwally, Deputy Head of the Technical Secretariat of the Alliance; Dr. Wajida Anwar, Deputy President of the General Union; as well as heads of sectoral and regional unions of NGOs and civil society organizations from various governorates, accompanied by a delegation from the Alliance and members of the Union’s Board of Directors.
The meeting aimed to consult on the main features of the National Alliance’s general strategy currently under preparation, explore ways to implement it, and deepen cooperation and role integration, considering that the General Union is a founding and active member of the Alliance and represents a broad umbrella for civil society work in Egypt.
During the meeting, Hatem Metwally, Deputy Head of the Technical Secretariat of the Alliance, presented a comprehensive technical overview of the methodologies followed in preparing the draft strategy and the outputs of the first and second phases, which are being formulated by Strategic Gears, one of the leading international consulting firms in this field. Metwally highlighted that the strategy document includes precise tools for impact measurement and performance evaluation according to international standards, emphasizing that this project is the result of intensive participatory efforts, including over 50 hours of workshops involving all members of the National Alliance to produce a consensual vision reflecting all parties within the system.
Ambassador Nabila Makram, Head of the Technical Secretariat of the Alliance, stressed the importance of this meeting hosted at the Union’s headquarters, noting the Alliance’s commitment to engaging the Union and all heads of sectoral and regional unions in shaping this vision to ensure integration of executive efforts. She added that the new strategy aims to shift operational mechanisms from merely providing direct aid to adopting comprehensive development and economic empowerment approaches based on a detailed analysis of community needs according to the gap map held by the National Alliance, in addition to establishing effective mechanisms for volunteering efforts.
In his remarks, Dr. Talaat Abdel Qawy, President of the General Union of NGOs and Civil Society Organizations, welcomed the Alliance delegation to the House of Civil Society Organizations, commending the Alliance’s serious steps and scientific approach to developing the civil society environment. He affirmed that the Union and the regional unions across the governorates are offering all their expertise and broad base to support these initiatives aligned with Egypt’s Vision 2030, stressing the importance of the Union’s role as a member of the Alliance to ensure services reach the eligible beneficiaries.
The meeting concluded with agreement on a roadmap for joint work and confirmation that the Technical Secretariat of the National Alliance will continue to follow up on finalizing the outputs with the consulting firm, taking into account all perspectives and suggestions raised during the discussion, paving the way for a new phase of organized work.
