On the occasion of International Migrants Day, the Egyptian Feminist Lawyers Association emphasized that this day serves as an important moment to highlight the conditions of millions of migrants and refugees worldwide, and the humanitarian and rights-related challenges they face, particularly women and girls, amid armed conflicts, economic crises, and climate changes.
The association praised the efforts of the Egyptian state in hosting millions of refugees and migrants of various nationalities, providing them with a relatively safe environment within Egyptian society without establishing isolation camps, and offering basic services in health and education, reflecting Egypt’s commitment to the principles of humanity and international solidarity.
In this context, Rabha Fathy, Chairperson of the Egyptian Feminist Lawyers Association, stated that civil society organizations and human rights groups in Egypt play a pivotal role in supporting refugees and migrants, not only through humanitarian aid but also through comprehensive programs for psychological, moral, and logistical support, capacity building, social integration, and defending their fundamental rights, especially for the most vulnerable groups.
The Chairperson highlighted that displaced women face heightened risks due to forced migration, exposing them to multiple forms of violations, including gender-based violence, exploitation, and the absence of legal and social protection. She noted the recent displacement of large numbers of Sudanese women and others from conflict-affected countries to Egypt, which requires a comprehensive human rights and humanitarian response that considers the specific conditions of women.
She added that the Egyptian Feminist Lawyers Association provides legal support to displaced women in Egypt through legal consultations, assistance in personal status, violence, and discrimination cases, along with rights awareness programs, psychosocial support, and coordination with relevant authorities to ensure their access to services and protection.
The association stressed that migration and asylum are not merely statistics, but human stories that require fair policies and genuine cooperation between the state, civil society, and international organizations to safeguard the dignity of migrants and refugees, especially women, and to enable them to live with dignity and security.
