The United Nations announced that it has taken note of the peace initiative submitted by Sudan’s transitional Prime Minister, Kamel Idris, emphasizing its support for any effort aimed at ending the ongoing conflict and preserving Sudan’s unity and territorial integrity.

The UN spokesperson’s office stated on Friday that the Secretary-General continues to stress the critical importance of achieving a comprehensive and lasting peace as the conflict enters a new year.

He called on all parties to agree to an immediate cessation of hostilities and to reach a permanent ceasefire, urging all Sudanese stakeholders to prioritize consensus and develop a shared vision for a civilian-led transition.

The spokesperson added that the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy to Sudan, Mr. Ramtane Lamamra, is fully prepared to continue consultations with both parties to reach a comprehensive and sustainable solution to the conflict, complementing and reinforcing ongoing efforts by member states and key partners.

Prime Minister Kamel Idris had presented the initiative during a briefing to the UN Security Council, highlighting that it is based on international principles and provides a realistic, practical, and comprehensive framework to protect civilians from atrocities, restore state authority and responsibility, and open the door to national reconciliation.

Idris emphasized that the initiative is homegrown and not externally imposed, stating: “This is not about winning a war, but ending the cycle of violence that Sudan has endured for decades.”

He detailed the initiative’s provisions, including a ceasefire, the assembly of militia fighters in designated camps, disarmament, and measures related to displaced persons, refugees, and humanitarian assistance. He also discussed “confidence-building measures” to ensure adherence to the Sudanese government’s peace initiative, covering political, economic, security, and social dimensions.

Separately, the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) announced the completion of the evacuation of its logistics base in Kadugli, South Kordofan, after nearly thirteen years of operations. The evacuation successfully relocated UN personnel and some NGO staff over the past weekend.

This withdrawal follows a comprehensive security assessment in Kadugli after a drone attack on the logistics base on 13 December, which killed six UN peacekeepers and seriously injured nine others. The bodies of the six peacekeepers killed in the attack were transported to Bangladesh, while eight of the injured are receiving treatment at a hospital in Nairobi, Kenya.
